The Martini Rule
We've really had a lovely run of flat seas and nice temperatures and today was no exception. There was a seal playing around and I felt a little apprehensive as there was a seal attack in the harbour area over the weekend, and the existing concerns around rabies. Luckily this seal seemed friendly and not particularly interested in us. I've had some comments after the previous blog and thought that maybe I should share some more pictures. Don't worry, I will return to posting

A slightly different throwback...
Trying to look calm Today's post is something slightly different. For most of the 'noughties' I worked in pre-hospital emergency care - as flight medic on helicopters, doing mountain and sea rescue, working at sea, first on Cruise Ships and later on the Oil Rigs. Part of the job description in all of these is knowing how to save yourself (and then others) in case of a helicopter crashing into the ocean. This meant doing Helicopter Underwater Escape Training, where they essent

Flat as a pancake
Yesterday the waves were big and noisy, and somehow today the conditions were perfect. This picture was taken just before 7 and you can see that the sun is coming up a little bit later from beyond the mountain - hence the shadow. Seasons are changing... I've been very slow to write this year thus far, partially because I don't always have a my phone with me to take pictures. But will try and be a bit more consistent again!

Halfway through January 2026
We are flying through January, the classic Latin being 'Tempus Fugit' meaning that time flees. I've been working on a photo book for the swimrisers, that will have some pictures taken over the years, and selecting a nice mix has been quite a task! At least with the blog I have the dates and years of some of the pictures. I suppose this is a good time to mention that part of the reason why I'm capturing all the pictures is because I am not planning on renewing the subscription

Rainy day and Portunus Sangionolentus (crab)
This morning was overcast and beautiful with misty clouds over Karbonkelberg. Rumour has it that there were dolphins...but I didn't see any. Later on, I fulfilled my civic duties and did a beach patrol in the rain and I was completely soaked. This picture is from the beach patrols and it offers a different view of the bay for a change. I also saw lots of dead crabs. This could be due to red tide, as there was warnings issued for the West Coast. However... I took a really nice

Last day of 2025
"The year is dying in the night.” - Tennyson This year, 2025 simply flew by... I feel like I have not yet settled into the year, and now it is over already! This has been a tough year for many people, and let's hope that 2026 will bring lots of joy and that there will be more moments to saviour. I did not think this blog will make it to the end of this year. For nearly three years now, I've been posting photos and writing a few lines about the swims. Sometimes it feels

Living in paradise
The last few days has been phenomenal. Very little wind, no waves, great visibility and lots of dolphins. There were also a lot of people on SUPs and canoes and the dolphins were putting up a show right in front of them. To do our bit for Hout Bay, Camilla and I did a beach patrol yesterday. The patrols are divided into two hour slots, and we took the 12-14h00 shift. The beach was busy but not too crowded, and fortunately everyone was behaving themselves. We had to wear funky

December musings
The other day on Facebook a memory came up of a blog I wrote about 2 years ago, so it feels like a good time for some reflection on the blog. This could have been an instragram page, and perhaps it would have been visually more interesting. But for some reason the thought of a blog appealed, and it has afforded me the ability to sometimes post links, and write a little bit more. If anything I have just not optimised the choice of opting for the blog. Maybe next year.... But w

Dolphins...pods and pods of dolphins
I was on the beach a bit later than usual this morning for a quick dip and coffee. It was so amazing as whilst we were having coffee there were simply dolphins everywhere - jumping out of the water, coming incredibly close to the kayaks in the picture and it was just breathtaking. There were more than one pod and I felt like I didn't know where to look.
