We've been very blessed with the lovely full moon, pinkish skies and flat ocean this week!
I also wanted to add some additional reading I've been doing on the benefits of using the sauna. About two weeks ago I wrote about cold plunging, and to avoid the blog being too long and tedious, I left the bit that I'm sharing now out.
This builds on the the previous blog, and the concept of hormesis applies. It seems like cold plunging and sauna are better when we do it on alternative days or a few times a week as opposed to doing it every day. Andrew Huberman suggests using the sauna 2-3 times a week to a total of 57 minutes (bit arbitrary - why not just 60 minutes??). Susana Soeberg recommends about 4 times a week for 5-20 minutes per session.
The health benefits includes reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease, and it may lower the risk of dementia and other neurodegenerative disease.
If you want to do contrast therapy then you should sauna first, and then cold plunge and allow your body to rewarm naturally (Soeberg principle).
I'm not sure if this is good practice, but what I like to do if I sauna is to sauna after my swim, and to then do a cold plunge after that - but literally just a dip back into the cold water. I find it so refreshing.
